Gift of Silence

I stared through

the flames

hypnotized

by inner fire,

soothed by darkness,

peered through

a shivering window

at reptilian stone

ridges,

  gray lichen,

noted the faded glory

of baby beech,

partridgeberry

and wintergreen

warming his feet.

 Sturdy hemlock,

bare oaks and

 silver river flow

 my dearest companions.

Silence is

my refuge.
